Animal Behavior Essentials: What You Need to Know
Why is it important to understand your pet's behaviour?
Animals usually express themselves through their body language, and if you fail to understand it, it becomes difficult to know their basic expressions like when they want to eat, rest, etc. When you own a pet, your curiosity about their behaviour also increases. To strengthen the loving bond you share with your pet, it is necessary to understand their body language. Knowing an animal's behaviour helps you better understand your pet, their needs, what they like, dislike, etc. It helps you reduce your stress when you know what your pet is demanding.
A
cat's behaviour can be mostly understood through the movement and curling of
its tails.
● To know when your cats
are at ease- Their tails are held upright or slightly curled at the end.
● To know if they are
threatened- The tail has a “bottlebrush” appearance and in a way, its tail is
turned upright.
● When a cat rubs its
head on its owner's feet, it means that it trusts you.
● When a cat flattens its
ears, it is a sign of aggression.
● Purring of cats is
usually a sign of contentment but sometimes they also do when they aren't
feeling too well.
Dogs
are known to be good at expressing themselves and hence understanding them is
easier. Here are some expressions you should know:
● Tucking their tail
between their legs- a sign of being terrified
● Continuously wagging
its tail lifted high- a cheerful mood and at the comfort
● Mounting- This isn't
always a sexual act, as popularly known. It can also be done to relieve stress
and even attract attention
● Lip licking and
yawning- This means that your dog is feeling stressed in the environment.
● Exposing belly is
usually considered a sign of wanting to play.
Birds
are a beautiful form of life created by god but not many people spend their
time understanding their behaviour. The observation and insights you get by
reading about birds are a wholesome experience altogether.
Here
are some noticeable behaviours:
● Singing- It is a sign
of territory. They want you to know where they belong.
● Feeding and stopping
frequently to listen to the surroundings around- They are in their high
alertness mode.
Rabbit
owners would love to know what the various actions of their pets mean.
● Running around the
house aimlessly- Is their way of expressing pure excitement.
● Screaming- A rabbit
barely screams but when it does, it is a sign of fear and stress.
