5 Rainy Day Dog Walking Essentials
Just like us
humans, dogs also need a significant amount of exercise daily, whether it is a
sunny day or a rainy day. On a day when it rains and we’ve to go for a walk or
jog, we can easily skip the outdoors and do a treadmill instead. But for dogs,
it is a matter of concern. All of us have noticed dogs running for shelters as
soon as it starts raining.
It might take a
little extra effort from your end to convince your dog for a walk in the rain
as it is vital for them. But can only do this with the right essentials of
weather-appropriate gear to ensure they are as comfortable walking in the rain
as they are in sun.
Here are some
of the essentials for taking your dog on a walk on a rainy day:
1.
Choose routes with less traffic
More cars on
road mean more splashes on you and your dogs because of the puddles. Some pups
even feel uncomfortable because of the honking and loud noises in general. On a
rainy day, these sounds are louder. Hence, it's favourable to choose a quieter
and less traffic route for a more fun walk.
2.
Choose a reflective collar and leash
A big problem
that drivers face on a rainy day is unclear vision because of which they might
not be able to see the pets ahead of them clearly. This increases the chances
of accidents during this time. It is therefore extremely important to make your
dog wear a collar that flashes through a distance and can catch the attention
of the drivers.
3.
Have a towel ready
Always keep
your dog’s towel handy to wipe him as soon as you reach home. On such a day,
you need to find a spot near your home entrance where your dog can easily shake
off the water that has saturated his hair and body. If you don't have such a
spot, then cover your furniture and other things with a plastic sheet or
blankets to save your furniture from what probably is muddy water as when the
dog shakes his body, the water reaches long distances.
4.
Dog raincoats
This is
probably the best way to keep your dogs going in the rain. Making them wear a
raincoat protects them from getting wet and from the windy/cold weather. Dogs
also feel more comfortable going in the rain wearing a raincoat. Sometimes they
don't immediately adjust to wearing a raincoat, so make them wear it 2-3 times
in the house and once they are at ease with it, you can make them go for walks
in the rain.
5.
No puddle drinking
As short and
simple as it may sound, it is actually a very important one! You can’t let your
pet drink the puddle as it is very harmful causing diseases and infections
among them. This can even bring infections to your houses as well. One has to be very alert regarding this while
taking their dogs for a walk during this time.
The health of
your dog is crucial so it's important that the above measures are taken care of
during the rainy season. You can always go for pet grooming services after a
specific time interval to ensure the proper cleaning of your dog, especially
during these times.
